We've all been busy with varied international projects and adventures...

Now it is time to produce BORN FOR NOTHING. After developing it for three weeks at The Watermill Center residency, we are ready to go into a final rehearsal process and then production.

We are currently looking for the right space the perform it in New York City (or beyond!). Check out a video about our process and let us know if you have any ideas. Guest artist: Joshua Dumas + Contributing artists: Tegan Ritz McDuffie, Natalia Roumelioti / ntilit, Anna Kiraly, Laura Mroczkowski.

Thanks to all our amazing friends and donors for your support!

BORN FOR NOTHING at Watermill

BORN FOR NOTHING is an interdisciplinary live art event structured as an investigation into methods of survival. Loosely inspired by themes in Knut Hamsun’s novel HUNGER and humanity’s current relationship to water—which experts predict could soon engulf us—Lydian Junction plays with the mundane and the extreme. With a quirky, metaphorical point-of-view, they explore the value (and dangers) of adhering to routine, ecstatic embodiment of the ephemeral, and the struggle (and joys) of attempting to survive as a solitary individual in solidarity with a group. BORN FOR NOTHING asks: do a person’s minute actions lead to monumental changes for a civilization, or are we just born for nothing?

On March 8 and 9 we performed at the (UN)Fair Art Show, right down the block from The Armory, surrounded by wonderful art. Thanks to our friend Jon Morris at the Windmill Factory!

We performed UNTITLED #5, a site-specific durational experiment as part of our research into BORN FOR NOTHING, incorporating material created over the past three years and material created in the moment.

Sarah spent 4.5 weeks of February/March at the Akumal International Artist Restidency in Mexico. Her two goals were to build out the structure for Lydian Junction's BORN FOR NOTHING and execute the second (research-based) iteration of 36.5.

Scroll down on the 36.5 page to see photos and a time-lapse video, and check out the blog that tracked her discoveries along the way...

A visit to Watermill

Chris and Sarah took a trip to Robert Wilson's Watermill Center at the beginning of the month to begin thinking about our residency in 2014. We were blown away by the space and the staff was amazing! This picture is of Chris walking through "The Knee" which is the center of the building, separating the work space from the living space. The natural sundial light that shines into the room and moves throughout the course of the day begs for performance. We're excited about the library and the way the property is said to change with the seasons. We hope to do a few more research trips before we land there next October...

443 West 127th Street, New York, NY

BORN FOR NOTHING is Lydian Junction’s newest experiment in creation, stemming from two seemingly disparate source materials/ideas: Knut Hamsun’s novel, HUNGER, in which a writer starves himself in pursuit of his work and New York City’s current relationship to sea-water which threatens to engulf us all. The goal: to investigate different means of survival and the contemporary connection between art and suffering/sacrifice in late global capitalism. Looking at these ideas with a personal lens and metaphorical point of view, the artists of Lydian Junction are exploring: how an individual encounters a city, NYC as the Wild West, the need for instruction and guidance in our daily lives, the value of adhering to routine versus rebelling against routine, negotiation of space, struggles that come with attempting to survive as a solitary individual versus in solidarity with a group, what happens to the body when we’re really hungry, and on the micro/macro level: how a person’s minute everyday actions can lead to monumental moments of change for an entire civilization. Guest artist: Alexis Steeves.

THE FURNITURE SONG and other site-specific pop-up performances + video created for New Georges BIG benefit party at the Henoch family townhouse where Do Ho Suh has kept his New York studio since he moved from Korea.

Oliver and Dages made a grand entrance on a motorcycle!  Karla made some video art with a gorgeous red  mid-century chair, and Chris wrote music to go with lyrics written by New Georges' Producing Artistic Director Susan Bernfield. Susan and Sarah sang the song, accompanied by Rachel Peters.
